Phylum Chordata
Unique characteristics of Phylum Chordata :
· Notochord
Longitudinal , flexible rod
Provide skeletal support
· The presence of pharyngeal cleft
~ Found in all chordate embryos
Function:invertebrates chordates
- suspension feeding devices (invertebrates chordates)
- modified for gaseous exchange (vertebrates)
· Dorsal hollow nerve cord
Develops from a plate of ectoderm that rolls into a tube located aboved the notochord
Develops into central nervous system
-brain and spinal chord
· Post anal tail
Tail extanding posterior to anus
Lost during embryonic development
Contain skeletal elements and muscles
Provides propelling force in many aquatic species
· Myotomes
Muscular tissues arranged in blocks
Present in embryonic stage
Maintained in some adults chordates
· Close circulatory system
Hepatic portal system
Heart is ventral position
Classification of chordata into 4 subphyla :
Urochordata (sea squirt ,Halocynthia sp.)
Hemichordata (acorn worm , Saccoglossus sp . )
Cephalochordata (lancelet , Amphioxus sp .)
·
Six common classes of sub-phylum vertebrata:
Class Chondrichthyes (ray fish , Raja sp.)
· Class Osteichthyes(scad , Selar sp.)
Class Amphibia (frog , Rana sp.)
Class Aves (pigeon ,Columba sp. )
Class Reptile (Crocodile. Cocodilus sp .)
Class Mammalia (rat , Rattus sp.)
